A racial truth, from a teacher

I've been teaching high school English for about 20 years now. About 15 years ago, we were pressured to replace some of the "classic" novels with more contemporary novels written by "diverse" people, which meant black authors according to my school board. So we did. My friends in the Social Studies department were told to focus less on Eurocentric history, and more on the "marginalized peoples of the world". So they did. Throughout my time at this school, our demographics haven't changed. We're about 50% white, 40% black, and 10% Hispanic. Like most schools, the richer and more advanced students tend to be white, and the poorer students with more academic struggles are black. Anyway, what were the results of this curriculum shift, you ask? A dramatic rise in the percentage of our alum who end up dropping out of college, mostly because they can't handle the workload. Not just the black students, but the white students too. It didn't make ANYTHING better. Everything got worse for everyone. They changed something that was working just fine in the interested of political correctness. These students - about 400 per year, times 15 years - that's about 6,000 students who have been screwed over by this new curriculum. Why? To make some black adults on the school board feel better about themselves and their culture? It's not just my school. Other districts across the country are getting the same results. You can even look it up on google - college students who come from high schools with a "multicultural" curriculum struggle to keep up in college.

Well, that's what happens when politics and political correctness enters the classroom. I know of many teachers who teach in public schools, but send their own kids to a private school. That should tell you something.
